This assignment has two parts. The first is individual and the second is for your Zoom meeting. Having right" answers is not as important as the group discussion, so please think through your answers so you can talk with your group about choices. Please do not search the internet for answers. Your thinking and conversation are more important than the answers you choose. You will find a situation described below. Read it, then make your choices based on what you think, without talking to anyone else. Do this before your group meets on Zoom. The Zoom meeting is for your group to talk about choices and come up with a group decision. Please do not vote on choices. Instead, talk about choices until you all agree. This problem is a winter survival situation. You have just crash-landed in the woods where Minnesota meets Manitoba. It is 11:32am in mid-January. The light plane in which you were travelling crashed on a lake. The pilot & co-pilot were killed. Shortly after the crash, the plane sank completely into the lake, with the pilot's and co-pilot's bodies inside. You (the survivors) are not injured and you are all dry. The crash came suddenly, before the pilot had time to radio for help or to inform anyone of your position. Because your pilot was trying to avoid a storm, you know the plane was considerably off course. The pilot announced shortly before the crash that you were 20 miles northwest of a small town that is the nearest known habitation. You are in a wilderness area made up of thick woods broken by many lakes and streams. The snow varies from above the ankles in wind-swept areas to hip-deep where it has drifted. The last weather report indicated that the temperature would reach minus 25F (-30C) in the daytime, and -40F (-40C) at night. There is plenty of tinder (dead wood and twigs) in the area. You are dressed in winter clothing appropriate for city wear suits, pantsuits, street shoes and overcoats. While escaping from the plane, the members of your group salvaged twelve items, listed in the table below Your task is to rank these items according to their importance for your survival, starting with 1 for the most important and ending with 12, for the least. After you have ranked the items by yourself (without discussion), you are to discuss the items with your group & come to agreement on the rank order for the items. You may assume that the number of passengers is the same as the number of persons in your group, and that the group has agreed to stick together. Decision Form Item Your Ranking Group Ranking Ball of steel wool Newspapers (one per person) Compass Hand axe Cigarette lighter (without fuel) Loaded.45 calibre pistol Sectional air map (made of plastic) 5m x 5m piece of heavy-duty canvas Extra shirt & pants for everyone Metal can of shortening Litre of 100 proof whiskey Family sized chocolate bar (one per person) Write your ranking in the first column and the group answers in the second column. Leave the third column empy
