This assignment is intended to demonstrate how pH may affect selectivity of eluting chromatographic peaks. Review the lecture module on Selectivity then answer the following questions. Given: pka for ibuprofen is 5.2. Question: Draw three chromatograms (same scale but no need to include retention times) corresponding to ibuprofen sample solutions injected into 3HPLC systems that are identical in every aspect, except for their mobile phase pH (shown below): a. pH7.2 b. pH3.2 c. pH5.2 Hint: - Using your knowledge of the Henderson Hasselbalch equation, draw structure(s) of ibuprofen at the different pH before drawing your chromatograms and determining which peak elutes before the other. - Label each chromatographic peak as either ionized ibuprofen or un-ionized ibuprofen. Important: 1. Draw each chromatogram directly below (or above) the other ( same time scale for easy comparison); otherwise, I cannot interpret your answer unambiguously, and therefore have no choice but to assign zero mark. 2. Your top chromatogram must be labeled pH7.2, middle labeled pH3.2, and bottom labeled pH5.2. 3. Label each chromatographic peak as either ionized ibuprofen or un-ionized ibuprofen. This assignment format requires that you submit your answer through Bb 'test'. Please submit your answer only as a 'pdf' file. Attach File
