This assignment is to be done individually. Now that we have discussed error and design in class, spend a few days observing the ways that people interact with devices in real life. Note the kinds of errors that they make and the situations that lead to these errors. Find an example of good user interface design, and an example of bad user interface design. You must select one device and one software. Your examples should be specific. It's very hard to find a large interface that's completely good or completely bad, so don't try. Instead, focus on a particular feature or aspect of a user interface that makes your case. Avoid fuzzy words like "intuitive" and "user-friendly". Find concrete reasons for your judgment. You must select one software and one device to criticize their interfaces, One of your selections should be a good example and the other is a bad example. The software could be any website, application that you use. The device should be from the following list: 1. Smart Tv 2. Remote Control 3. Air fryer 4. Automatic Washing machine 5. Smartwatch Important Notes: 1. Try to understand how this design came about in the first place. Was the problem caused by bad design or does it appear that the bad design is caused by constraints the designers received from engineering (e.g., bulky hardware) or marketing (e.g., cost cutting)? 2. Would you assume that the designers were unaware of the usability problems they created or rather that they deliberately accepted them in order to optimize the design with respect to an objective outside of usability, such as nicer visual design or lower production or maintenance costs? 3. How do you think the designer wanted a person to react, and why did the person react in the manner you observed? 4. Any ideas on how this can be fixed? Can you make suggestions for how to alleviate the problem? Who would have to get involved in order to fix the problem? Is this an easy to fix problem (change a door handle) or does it require a joint effort (e,g. unifying which side cars drive on worldwide)? 5. Note that we're asking you to observe someone else, rather than to reflect on your own experience! We are also looking for direct observation - not secondhand information. This assignment asks you to prepare the following: 1. A 3-page write-up describing the situation and proposing a solution. Be sure to answer the above questions in your write-up. Graphics, photographs, sketches, etc. must be included to help explain the issues. Two to three students will be selected to present their assignments during class
