Assignment You have just been hired by the owners of NUTRI FOODS as the first Risk Manager and have been asked to prepare a BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN (BCP). A BCP allows the organization to analyze all possible eventualities to determine the critical functions that must continue during a disruption so that the organization survives, recovers and resumes operations to meet is pre-determined goals. As the Risk Manager you will develop a detailed plan of action to mitigate risk and maintain operations regardless of external and internal events that could otherwise prove disastrous. The BCP entails 7 steps and you are to outline all of these with particular emphasis on conducting a BUSINESS IMPACT ANALYSIS and a RISK ASSESSMENT identifying and prioritizing the risks as outlined in the RISK QUADRANTS. You must list what tools you will use to assist you. You will be evaluated based on the following criteria: 1. Your understanding of the fundamental concepts of business continuity planning including recovery goals 2. Business Impact Analysis 3. Identification of key risks and relative significance 4. The effectiveness of your BCP in meeting the goals of the organization Background Information: NUTRI FOODS has been in operation since 1937 however there is a new management/owner team as of 2010. They are a food processor of nutritional and organic snacks for institutions, primarily schools, day care facilities and theme parks. The processing facility is situated in rural Niagara region. In fact it is very accessible by water as it backs onto the Niagara River and uses the water gateways to do most of the transporting of food to their customers and suppliers It is also accessible by rail which was just extended to service the newly created Niagara Nuclear Plant which is upstream (about 30 km away). There are highways leading to roads that lead to the major plant but the conditions are poor especially in the winter months. Organic Meat Inc. uses special feed to produce exceptionally tasty and tender meat and eggs. Also, all vegetables come from another Niagara organic producer. Organic Veggies Inc. utilizes a special water filtration system to enhance the greenness and taste of its vegetables. These two food suppliers are within 60 km of NUTRI FOODS processing plant. NUTRI FOODS consists of one processing plant (which also sorts and packages all orders) and one climate controlled storage facility for finished products, located within 800 feet of each other. The storage building also has an office with employs 15 employees and this is where the main computer servers are situated. The processing plant also has one floor in this building dedicated to Research and Development with a clean room environment. The storage building is state of the art with the latest in humidity free technology and temperature controls. This building was built in 2011 is one of a kind in all of North America. Both plants are 75,000 square feet each and have equipment that is computerized including overhead cranes. They try to operate as green and lean as possible and all garbage is sorted before disposal for recycling. There are a total of 250 employees working at Nutri Foods plus the 15 office workers. All deliveries are contracted to an outside transportation company that has a fleet of trucks and boats (for water travel). Discussions are underway to use the rail system as well especially for longer distances such Florida and Vaughan Ontario. Nutri Foods major customers include the Hamilton and Niagara Public and Separate School Boards, Canadas Wonderland and Darrien Lake, NY. . Nutri Foods has guidelines in place with Organic Meat Inc. and Organic Veggies Inc. on how the raw materials are to be supplied in order to meet the stringent contract requirements of school boards and other customers. The contracts with the theme parks also stipulates the importance of ensuring all contents are organic and defines penalties if such guidelines are not met. There have been a series of floods along the Niagara River especially this past winter season. Although special dams have been built there is fear that these dams do not have the capacity to hold the vast amounts of water originating from the increased frequency of severe storms. If there is flooding this can cause non organic pollutants to wash down river to the meat and veggie growers. Organic Meat Inc. informed Nutri Food that its shipment of meat products and eggs could be reduced by 50% if its feed and foliage is contaminated by the non organic pollutants from upstream brought downstream by any future severe flooding. Organic Veggies Inc. can also suffer the same if worse situation. Nutri Foods has to now work on a BCP considering this type of disaster which could lead to contract penalties with its major customers as they will not be able to meet the contractual requirements but also its customers orders.
