Dr. Lisa Cahill asserts that "grassroots organizing, participation in the networks of civil society, and the partnering of explicitly religious and faith-based organizations with counterparts from other religious or nonreligious counterparts has been underappreciated" (p. 25). Her argument has two important parts. First: that in any bioethical debate, values and norms come from both religious and non-religious sources, and second, that the best bioethical thinking and practice comes through collaboration. Dr. Maggie Little, whose lecture we watched at the start of the course, would agree.

Address the following questions in depth:

Part 1: When you consider Bioethics, what norms and values are most important to you? How will you incorporate them into your decision-making?

Part 2: What opportunities do you see for collaboration between groups you may be part of (religious or secular) and other groups who seem to have opposing goals? What examples of collaboration have you seen, in politics, religion, and science, that seem to be bearing fruit? What collaborations would you like to see? How might collaboration contribute to issues in global health inequalities?

The above article discusses the value of bioethics in relation to various areas of health care. Scientist want to do research - should they be required to consider what the ethical results of their research will be? Should that limit research? What about indirect benefits gained from scientific research? Bioethics research has the potential to be greatly enriched by collaborative research, by bringing together ethicists and scientific researchers.
