I am currently serving in a leadership position and serving in various leadership positions for the last 20 years. I have worked my way up the leadership chain. I have many experiences and opportunities that have afforded me to gain skills, knowledge, and qualities of a good leader.

From our readings, looking at Goldberg's five factors of personality, he mentions openness. From my experience, one of the characteristics that I believe has made me a good leader is my ability to be open. Our text defines transparency as to how a person works to understand others' concerns, the ability to explore new things, willingness to be vulnerable, and the ability to operate and think outside of the box. Being a good leader will require you to be flexible to accomplish the task ahead of you. Additionally, it is also crucial that you establish a genuine relationship with subordinates to understand their needs and concerns professionally and personally. Both will require a leader to be open.

Another characteristic of a good leader, I would say, is to remain humble and display humility. Leaders who demonstrate humility think less about themselves and how they look and more about their subordinates and help them continue to be successful. Their focus is more on what is best for the team and not what is best for them. Humility allows the leader to show their team that they care, and they are with them, and their focus is truly on what is best for the team, not just themselves.

Furthermore, good leaders hold themselves accountable and others accountable. I would argue that the first person that a good leader holds accountable is themselves. The accountability starts with them being responsible for their duties, established standards, policies, superiors, peers, and subordinates. Good leaders also hold associates accountable and provide feedback and corrections on behaviors that are out of compliance with standards and policies.

Good leaders are inspirational! They work to inspire subordinates and peers, both personally and professionally. Inspiration take form in the example that you set in words, actions, and follow-through. Positivity is just as contagious as negativity but produces far more significant benefits than negativity, which increases morale, productivity, commitment, and quality of work in the work center. When leaders take the position to inspire their team and teammates, they can easily conquer any present or future challenge or obstacle in their path.

Moreover, good leaders must have a vision for their team. Teams need to have direction, understand their purpose, know where they are going, and understand their expectations. Good leaders establish and set organizational leadership and make keen decisiveness. A leader without a vision for their team eventually causes the team to lose direction and focus.
