Recently, the economy has taken 2 downturn and management has decided it is time for the payroll to "go on a diet (a euphemism for a reduction in force). Mary is the of the commercial glass sales division of USPG. Frank, the CEO, has asked Mary to determine how her division is going to trim Case for Discussion: manager $60,000 from its payroll expenses. There are four full time employees within the commercial glass sales division: Mary, Adam, Bob, and Cathy. Adam has been with USPG for 18 years and has been the leading sales associate in the company for the last 9 years. Adam sales numbers have increased every year for the last 9 years. Bob was hired away from a USPG competitor six months ago Bob is just now getting the lay of the land at USPG and is beginning to show promise but has yet to make any sales. Mary had hoped Bob would be productive by now. However, he is merely showing promise but lacks production at this point. Cathy has been with USPG for 7 years. Cathy's husband unexpectedly died five years ago and has left her as a widowed mother of two daughters (ages 12 and 8). Cathy's production with the company was more than satisfactory the first two years on the job. However, in the last five years Cathy has had a hard time physically and emotionally juggling the demands of being a single mother and a full-time employee.
