Topic on American humane: and how this movement is

Campaigns as big as the Humane Societies, "Be Kind to Animals" created a feasible to pass legislation that will protect animals from any harm. I chose this topic selectively because of its rising importance in our society today. It is a lesser-known movement and has immense room for growth if society is knowledgeable on the topic. Examining deeper into this movement may shed light on the motivations, tactics, and strategies of advocates of American humane, and the opposition encountered.

Intro):  have picked a social movement (american humane), and then narrowed that down toone organization within that movement.
A. The first part of your introduction should be an explanation of this organization. Who is it?Why is it part of a social movement/where does it fit into our definition of a social movement(see Stewart et al. Chap. 1)? How does it position itself in relation to the larger socialmovement? What is its primary goal or cause? What change do they want? Are they refutinganother (perhaps unstated) organization or movement?
B. Then, justify your choice of topic.1. Why is this organization rhetorically significant (i.e. why should they be studied)? Youcould also consider: what sets them apart from other organizations in this movement.
2. Why does this organization deserve your examination—what can be looked at that hasnot been before? (Some organizations have been thoroughly examined, while others havebeen overlooked. For example, I seriously doubt that any of you could say anythingabout Martin Luther King, Jr. that has not been said already.) In other words, how canyou justify your selection?
3. Identify the elements of the rhetorical situation (from course readings) for the timeperiod you are examining for your SMO (i.e., exigence, audience, and constraints). Whattype of climate did the movement face at the time? What opportunities or limitations didthis climate place on the movement? In other words, were particular strategies andtactics more easily available or constrained?
II. Stages paper ): Social movements reaffirm or reinvent their rhetoric as political andcultural situations change. Thus, the historical context is important in choosing persuasive rhetoricaltactics. In this paper, you will research and analyze the development of your movement, and moreparticularly, your SMO.A. Identify the life cycle of the movement (see Stewart et al. Chap. 4), tracing the various stages ofthe movement. As you do so, you should also indicate at which stage your SMO came into
being, and then trace its life cycle. Issues such as its origins, development, significant events,activities, etc. are important to understand before making more substantive critical judgments.


1. Depending upon your SMO, you may really want to trace the life cycle of your SMOrather than the entire movement. As always, feel free to come discuss this with me.
III. Leadership paper: You need to research the leader(s) of your SMO. If your SMO hasmore than one leader, you will need to do the following for each leader.
A. You might start with some introduction of who this person is, identifying significant events inher or his life (when they joined the movement, what galvanized them to join, when and howthey ascended to a leadership position, when they left the movement if they did and why,circumstances of death if relevant). This will be the smallest portion of your paper; y o u shouldonly include the relevant details.

B. How they attained and maintained leadership: y o u should use Stewart, Smith, and Denton'squalities and ideas (see Stewart et al. Chap. 5). Make sure to back up your claim with examplesand events from the leader's life—and here you might start to make a few evaluative remarksabout how good of a leader they were (based upon how well they fit the definition of thosequalities). SSD's categories are not checklists—not all of them will apply. If they do notpossess 2 of the 3 attributes, y o u should probably be saying they are not as effective. Do notforce a second attribute on them.
C. What kind of leader they are? You should use Stewart, Smith, and Denton's categories in the"nature of leadership" section (see Stewart et al. Chap. 5). Make sure to back up your claim withexamples and events from the leader's life. Y o u might draw upon speeches or statements theyhave made, actions they have taken
