Rough Draft: Importance of Communicating with Patients Taking a little extra time to communicate with your patient is vitally important in healthcare and provides better outcomes in patient care. Patients can really benefit from having a healthcare advocate. Don't necessarily need to define it; your readers will understand what communication is. Communicating with or about your patient can be very significant in the healthcare outcomes for a patient how so?. In nursing, a simple conversation can provide effective patient care, patient outcomes and patient satisfaction. Good. A positive effect on health outcomes is building relationships. Some patients don't have anyone to talk to while other patients would rather talk to someone other than family that they feel understands them and their condition. There are many types of communication, not only with the patient but also with the entire healthcare team and family. Communication between everyone is important. "Employers also recognize that successful communication between clinicians and patients, and effective clinician-to-clinician communication, improve patient experience and reduce complaints." (Moi Ali, 2017). The patient's family and/or close friends should always be involved in the patient plan of care. Why? All persons involved play major roles in adequate patient care. Communication can be interpersonal and or professional, what is the difference between them? whichever makes the patient feel most comfortable. Communication can make a patient's likes and dislikes clear. Why is that important? The more you know the more you can advocate for your patient. How so? There is more to communication than just communicating (???). Effective communication ensures that the message is received and understood with clarity and purpose. And why is that important? Connect that to this next sentence. "Effective communication in health care can make a life-or-death difference. Health administrators and other healthcare professionals can benefit from learning more about types of communication in health care, barriers to communication in health care, and evidence-based strategies for effective communication in health care today." (Tulane University, 2021). When a patient communicates with you and you make their voice heard shows care and compassion. Nurses are often busy which makes patients feel they don't have time for them. Pulling up a chair and or sitting with your patient shows attentiveness. Calling a family member can make the patient feel at ease to know their family is involved in their plan of care. Gaining a patient's trust and respect leads to better emotional, mental, and physical well-being. The more you communicate with and get to know your patient the more you can help change outcomes and experiences for your patient. Communication can help you to get a clear understanding of what's expected of you as a nurse and what's expected of the patient. Often times patients are scared and taking in too much information. Communication can provide clarity and understanding in many situations. Always make time to communicate with your patient because better communication equal better outcomes.
