Two additional subjects that could be integrated into this unit are math and writing. Math could be integrated into the experiment on changing states of matter. As part of this experiment, students could observe how ice cream changes as it melts. During the experiment, Ms. Keller could assist students as they use thermometers to measure the temperatures of the frozen ice cream and the melted ice cream. Students would record their observations from the experiment (including the temperatures of the frozen and melted ice cream) in their science journals. Next, students could calculate the difference in temperatures between the ice cream in its different states. Writing could be integrated into the end-of-unit assessment. As part of the assessment, students could be given two different items, such as a small plastic block and a piece of felt. Students could examine each item and write a paragraph that compares and contrasts the items' physical properties. For example, students could explain in writing that both objects are relatively light in weight, but the plastic block has a smooth texture, while the felt can be described as soft.
