Produced energy in a solar power plant can be saved by two energy storage systems of
PHES and CAES as follows. Determine the output power for each system and compare
them:
A) Using a pumped hydroelectric system (PHES) with charging capacity of 50m3s with a
pump with 80% efficiency to a reservoir which is (400+YZ) meter above. Electromotor used
for pumping has an efficiency of 93% and operates 5 hours per day. In the discharging
mode, a generator is coupled to the hydroturbine operating 8 hours/day. Exchanging
performance of the system is (70+Z)% and pressure losses at both charging and discharging is
assumed to be 5%.
B) Compressed air system (CAES) through compressing the air at 15oC and 100kPa pressure
up to 7Mpa. The compressed air then is stored in an underground reservoir. In order to
increase the air temperature to 1050 degree at the turbine inlet, a combustion chamber is
used with capacity of (2200+YZ)kghr fuel with HV=49MJkg. Isentropic efficiency of gas
turbine is 80% and for the compressor, it is 75%. operating period is 8 hours to generate
power.
