Utilizing a mixed method approach is very common among program evaluators because combining multiple methods into a single evaluation often results in a stronger, more complete evaluation than conventional evaluation approaches relying on only one method. A mixed method design can be carried out either sequentially or concurrently. In sequential designs, either the qualitative or quantitative data are collected in an initial stage, followed by the collection of the other data type during a second stage. In contrast, concurrent designs are characterized by the collection of both types of data during the same stage. When might it be appropriate to collect data concurrently as opposed to sequentially?
