Question:
We all know the differences between monologue and dialogue. However it is striking how often we consider monologues to actually be true conversations. This phenomenon is known as conversational narcissism. Describe a conversation you have recently been a part of in which the other person displayed this trait (i.e. they hijacked the discussion, made it all about them, had to be right, etc). How did this affect the exchange? What was your reaction to their narcissism? Then, describe a situation in which you catch yourself engaging in conversational narcissism. What was happening? What went through your mind when you realized the way you were treating the people listening to you talk? How did you fix it? Or did you? Lastly, in your opinion is this a legitimate issue within our culture? Is it a danger to you personally? How can being aware of this act impact your current and future relationships?
