We started this class with a value trading game and some of you were surprised with the values
you held in the end. Our life goals often go unspecified and only partially considered as we float
through life. But to what extent do our professional lives align with our values and goals when
we stop and reflect on them? Most people regularly make decisions that do not align with their
values, and sometimes this occurs even when stakes are high. This assignment serves as an
opportunity to reflect and align your goals and professional career.
The overall aim of the exercise is to walk you through the process of creating a scoring system
to quantify your preferences, based on a broader set of life goals that you are trying to satisfy.
You will do this by considering and listing your specific life goals and using them to create a
scoring system to evaluate a job.
The entire assignment will consist of three steps.
First, you will create a list of life goals and categorize them as described below.
Next, you will think about the job you hope to get after you have received your MBA. This
could be with your current or previous employer, or a new opportunity. With your goals
in mind, you will create a scoring system to evaluate the benefits financial
professional, lifestylerelated that this job offers.
Finally, you should discuss your goals and your scoring system with an important
stakeholder in your life and get their feedback. This can be a spouse, a mentor, a close
friend, or a parent.
