We want to design a database for a simplified light bulb manufacturing business. The types of light bulbs manufactured are either for a car - halogen or xenon, or for a home halogen, fluorescent. All light bulbs have power ratings (in Watts), colour temperature ratings (in F) and a brief description. The light bulbs designed for automobiles have industry standard codes to designate the automobiles they fit, and a type that specifies their role in the car. The bulbs designed for home have only the types compact screw in, compact plug-in, and tube. The workforce includes management, HR department, marketing department, technical department, as well as assembly line workers, quality control and maintenance. Each department must have a single supervisor/coordinator to make sure work is being done well. The HR department is responsible for hiring the workers, and the assembly line and quality control personnel are responsible for producing and packaging the light bulbs. The marketing department establishes contacts with retailers. The light bulbs for home are contracted to general retailers, and home and hardware stores, while the lights for automobiles are marketed only to specialty auto accessories stores (due to the high price).
Draw an Entity-Relationship diagram that will manage a database of all the entities specified above. Try to model the problem as closely as possible with all constraints and any necessary ER tools. State all assumptions you made they must be reasonable. Do not define your own constraints that we did not cover in class.
Draw another E-R diagram for the problem in 2, different from your previous answer. Again, this must be a reasonable design and you must state all your assumptions. Which design is better and why?
