Weather forecasting is an interpretation made by a meteorologist of data collected by satellites using climate models.

Given the personal nature of the knowledge the investigators rely upon, interpretation is bound to be subjective to some extent, in the sense that by bringing a different background, thinking mode and experience to bear on the same dataset, an investigator can come to very different conclusions. A widely publicized case in point is the global climate debate concerning the presence or absence of a temperature trend in time, which is the focus of the following example.
