Week 1 Day 4 Case Study Advocating for a Library 13-year-old Skawenniio Barnes couldn't research her high school assignment because there was no library in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake, Quebec. She wrote a letter to the community chief and the Mohawk council, asking for a library on the reserve, emphasizing the many benefits of access to a variety of current reading materials. Barnes wrote passionately about the rewards of reading, such as increased knowledge and vocabulary, and enhanced imagination. She also mentioned that the parents of children in the Mohawk immersion schools, who helped teach their children to read and write in English, needed contemporary resources. When her words got no immediate action, Barnes sent her letter on to the Eastern Door, a community newspaper. People responded positively. Then the Montreal media and Global Television focused on the story. Momentum grew, and Barnes became a member of the new library committee. Meanwhile, Barnes had entered and the CosmoGirl! of the Year contest. In her essay to CosmoGirl! magazine, Barnes told her story of trying to establish a community library. The resulting increased media attention garnered national awareness, and boxes of donated books arrived from across the country and around the world.
