Task 2 International Selection
The selection process for this project was undertaken jointly by managers in Mexico and the UK. A team of three engineers from Breeze-Mex was identified. These were as follows:
Rafael is a thirty-eight year old engineer with over ten years experience of working for Breeze-Mex. He has already worked on other international assignments; however, these assignments have only been within South America. He is married with two young children and Rafaels wife runs her own company in Mexico City. Rafaels family do not plan to accompany him on the assignment. Rafael studied English as a compulsory subject at high school and, later, at university; but has not used his English for more than a decade. He has already expressed his worries about being able to communicate in English.
Olivia is a twenty-seven-year-old engineer, originally from Belize, with five years experience of working for Breeze-Mex. She has never undertaken an international assignment before. Olivia is bilingual in Spanish and English and, during her undergraduate studies, Olivia studied in London for one year. Olivia is very excited about returning to the UK. She has a partner, Daniel, who works as asession musician and he is planning to accompany her on her assignment in the UK.
Julio originally from Oaxaca in Mexico, is twenty-four and joined Breeze-Mexeight months ago straight from Facultad de Ingeniera at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Julio graduated from his engineering degree with the equivalent of a UK first-class honours and is regarded within Breeze-Mex as someone with high potential. This UK project is his first major assignment. Julio is single and he has never been outside of Mexico. Julio studied English at high school, took some English classes at university and enjoys watching American movies, so he has a good knowledge of basic English. However, he has never spoken English with a native English speaker and is worried that he will have difficulties using English in the workplace.
With reference to the appropriate literature (especially around expatriate selection criteria), discuss the rationale behind the selection of Rafael, Julio and Olivia.
This task is worth 15 marks. Suggested word count: 500 words.
In this task, the expats are already selected. Selection lecture is in week 5. Check the selection criteria from the lecture and readings and then discuss about how each of the engineer is selected.
When you provide discussion, include relevant literature, the information given about each engineer based on their selection. Link the section criteria and theory to the facts on each engineers profile given above.
For example, Julio as a fresh new graduate in area of engineering and having first class honours degree and single.how can we include literature to this? Link this to selection relate literature and criteria and other relevant literature as well. Such as fresh graduate with ability of performing well youth age people easily adapt culture of other countries linking to culture relate literature. If red the literature of expatriate failure mostly it is relate to culture.
