Question:
Welfare benefits such as housing and Snap (food stamps) provide families with food and shelter, but many people do not realize the other high costs of running a household. Items such as toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, soap, garbage bags, and diapers (just to name a few).
In the United States, one out of three low-income families struggles to buy diapers, which cost up to $100 a month per baby (National Diaper Bank Network n.d.). Some babies are left in a soiled diaper for an entire day or longer because their parents cannot afford to buy an adequate supply of diapers. Babies who stay in dirty diapers for too long are exposed to potential health risks, and mothers who lack an adequate supply of diapers are more likely to report depression and anxiety and are more likely to abuse their children (Mencimer 2013).
Instructions:
Complete the Household budget worksheet provided. This will take some thought to think about the quantity that you might use. You may ask your parents if you do not yet live on your own. After determining how much you need for the month, go shopping. The best way to do this is to use an online shopping site like Walmart. Choose the brands you want. List the amount for each item and then the total amount for the month.
After completing the worksheet, answer the questions at the bottom of the worksheet.
