In this forum, we will discuss how Linear Equations are used in the real world. Whether you are aware or not, you are using them more than you might think.

Frequently students ponder "when will I ever use mathematics in real life." Sometimes it is hard for students to grasp the concepts of the real-life examples that their teachers provide them. Real-world math becomes easier to recognize, with the more life experiences you have under your belt. Ironically, we live in a world surrounded by math even if you have trouble recognizing it. Surely, this discussion will help you develop the skills to see math outside of the virtual classroom.

For a jumping-off point read further about these four areas, Rates, Variable Costs, Budgeting and Making Predictions listed by Jessica Smith in her article "How Are Linear Equations Used in Everyday Life?"(Links to an external site.) then discuss the following 3 points in your original post:

1. Where else in the real world can you find linear equations? Just give the concept, you do not have to solve an equation.
   • • Note: provide other examples other than the four (4) that were provided in the article.
     • Don't forget to cite your work, if you did not come up with the idea yourself.
2. Come up with two (2) topics of linear equations that are related. For example, the costs you incur for running a business and the revenue the business generates. See image below. The costs you have to run the business is one linear equation, and the revenue the business generates is another. You may talk about this abstractly. You are not required to provided equations. However, you may use them if you find it to be helpful.
3. State what you think the best method is, and why it is more appropriate than the others. Using the examples that you have come up within #2, choose which method from the ones we have learned do you think is the best for solving them, and why?
