Background Several weeks later, on his drive into the office, Joe realizes he's has been on the job for 6 months and has used every HR tool and resource he learned about in school, in addition to ones he learned "on the job". He chuckles at the naive confidence he had when finishing his HSM degree. Who knew the job would be so much more about managing people than finance, IT, quality, etc. However, despite all the challenges, he finds himself smiling. He has a great sense of accomplishment in that he now has a "leaner" more efficient leadership team of two. Both Ralph and Norton weathered the storm with Joe and, in the process, have built a good working relationship. Joe and his team did experience a loss of several staff (a mix of both high and low performers, and more from the smaller system than the other two systems). Some were not able to wait for progress or the environment became too hostile for them to stick with. The other teams were able to find some work process efficiencies with the help of a Lean-Sigma team. Although Joe did not meet all of his key performance goals initially established at his employment, he has stabilized work force and outcome metrics are showing a steady improvement. He is confident from his participation in the senior meetings that several of the other organizational departments have had similar challenges and not all have been successful in managing through and as a result there were significant financial losses. Joe's reflection on his team's accomplishments turns to a review of an internal list of tasks yet to be accomplished.
