What comment can I do a summary in 150 words

The concept of valuing diversity is being sensitive to and appreciating the differences among groups outside what was thought of as the mainstream and using those differences, coupled with basic human similarities as a positive force to increase productivity and efficiency and to avoid liability for discrimination (pg 256 of the textbook).

Valuing diversity to me means going beyond just tolerating differences. It means acknowledging and celebrating both similarities and differences, and leveraging both those similarities and differences through inclusion to maximize effectiveness.

There is a pretty detailed list of examples employers have used to apply diversity to the workplace on pages 259-260 of the text. Some of my favorites include:

  • Hold professional development workshops for high potential diverse employees.
  • Institute formal procedures to handle complaints from all employees especially diverse employees.
  • Hold management diversity training.
  • Build diversity into everything the employer does...
  • Have a diverse board of directors that reflects the demographics of the workforce (not in the book) and have those diverse board of directors members has a "road show" to meet with diverse employees for networking.
  • Review workplace policies and practices and their impact on diversity.
  • Seek the input of diverse groups in developing a workplace approach to diversity and inclusion.
