When assessing ELLs, it is important to know if their language abilities will allow them to participate in the assessment. Use the list of alternative assessments below and identity at what English proficiency level the assessment can be used. Directions: Identify a single proficiency level (Each level MUST be used at least once, be careful of what you identify for a LB since there are not many options). HINT: Look for it first. Explain why you selected this level. Be thorough with what information you see the ELL can do at this level and what the ELL is being asked to do. It must match. Your explanation / justification may help defend your selection and your overall score. Use the handout called Alternative Assessment Ideas in this module and the handout called ESOL proficiency level definitions. As you look at each assessment, think about what the students are truly able to do at each proficiency level to determine if they can or can't use the assessment.
