When looking at who supported Wegener's theory of horizontal displacement compared to Suess's or Dana's ideas of contraction, it becomes obvious that there is a regional bias by scientists. Many more scientists from south of the equator favored horizontal displacement, where those of North America and Europe were more likely to favor contraction. The reason for this is mainly because

Horizontal displacement only affected continents in the southern hemisphere. 

Evidence for horizontal displacement was much more obvious in the southern hemisphere, Wegener spent much more time in the southern hemisphere giving lectures on horizontal displacement.

It was soon after WWII and many in the northern hemisphere did not trust German scientists (like Wegener) at the time. 

Wegener first published his idea in German the major language of the southern hemisphere where horizontal displacement was more favored.
