When you return to the office after a lunch break, you receive the email below from Mrs. Rebecca Longweni. Read the email and answer her as soon as possible.

Good Day

My name is Rebecca Longweni and i heard about you from one of my friends you help a while go. I really hope you will be able to help me as well. I have my own catering business and we are doing really good financially. but recently there is a decline in sales and I also found that the complaints from customers increased. Up to now we had a very informal working environment in the business and everyone knows (I think and Hope so). What to do .I do not believe in these formal organizational structures. because they are so traditional and restrict creativity-my opinion , but over the last few months i had a lot of conflict with my employees, mainly because I feel they undermine my authority as owner and manager of the business. At this stage I acknowledge that i was wrong not to develop a set of organizational structure, but I need your advise in this regard and would appreciate it if you would explain the following to me.

1. What is authority in the organizational structures and is it important to have authority in a structure?

2. I also read in a book that an organizational structure should distinguish between accountability and responsibility. What is the difference between these two concepts and could you please explain this with examples within the context of a business?

3. I know my limitations and I really struggle to delegate, although all the books i read stipulate that managers need to delegate, Can you please tell me why managers need to delegate, and why do so many of us struggle to delegate?

4. Lastly, I already started to dot down possible drafts for an organizational structure based on the information I read in a management book by Hellriegel. On page 27 this book I saw that the authors shown human resources as a staff authority for some of the line managers. Why is this?

I look forward to you speedy feedback

Kind Regards

Rebecca
