The level of formal education achieved is thought to have been a protective factor for developing melanoma. A sample of 2000 people who screened positive for melanoma were identified from the local Molewise clinic. Another sample of 2000 people who screened negative for melanoma were identified from the same clinic. Individuals were sent surveys in the mail, asking about the level of formal education achieved prior to their screen result. The data obtained were dichotomised into 'completed-, did not complete-, secondary education'. No other factors were considered. The response rate for those who were melanoma positive was 62%, while 1780 responses were received from those who screened negative for melanoma. 75% of all respondents reported completion of secondary education, of whom 903 were melanoma cases.
