Check All That Apply The process of transcription is the first step of gene expression. The genetic information, stored in a gene's DNA, is exposed by the enzyme DNA polymerase and copied into a similar molecule called RNA in the cell nucleus. The specific type of RNA that contains the information for making a protein is called messenger RNA (mRNA) because it carries the information, or message, from the DNA out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm. mRNA delivers the genetic instructions to the protein producing machinery, lysosome, located in the cytoplasm of the cell. Transcription addresses the problem of location by making a copy of the section of the DNA that contains the gene of interest and transporting the information to the protein synthesis machinery located in a different area of the cell. Both RNA and DNA are made up of a chain of nucleotide bases, but they have slightly different properties. For example, RNA molecule uses uracil in place of thymine.
