While Transnet remains responsible for transporting close to $80\%$ of all rail$-$friendly freight tonne$-$kilometres, it moves less than $40\%$ if the rail$-$only coal and iron ore export lines are removed. Shockingly, in $2022,$ Transnet$$s export coal line underperformed by nearly $30\%$ in tonnage terms compared to the volumes achieved previously $($such as $2019),$ representing a further significant loss to the economy $($Freight Demand Model $[$FDM$]2022).$
