Wk 2's Discussion Question is a video case about Java Nook, a caf that was located in The Junction -- a neighbourhood so named for the area in which four railway lines intersect in West Toronto.

Today, the only evidence of the Caf's existence in The Junction is the video case in which Nora Pratt, producer and narrator of the CBC TV show, Venture, describes start-up issues that its owner-managers, Annette Lavigne and John Welcher, had faced.

Before viewing the video case, read and pay particular attention to the personality characteristics that successful owner-managers of small businesses must-have.

QUESTIONS

1.rReview the personality characteristics that successful owner-managers must-have. List two personality traits that Annette and/or John have in common with successful owner-managers. Defend your response with evidence of what Annette and/or John said or did.

2. At 6:20 in the video, John remarks that the break-even point is a hard figure to nail down. Explain how knowledge about break-even point could have helped set prices for products and establish a daily sales target for the Caf. Do you think that achieving daily sales of $400 was a reasonable target for the Caf? Explain.

3. At the end of the video, Nora Pratt informs the audience that the carpenter had decided to become a full partner of Java Nook Caf. Propose a hypothesis as to why the carpenter would become a full partner, especially if he had known about Java Nook Caf's start-up issues.
