1.) I will share some of things home health staff would share with me.

They felt patients were much sicker and required more time and hated the expected productivity per day/week (home visits); concerned if pulled from their routine geographic area; compared their salaries to other local health care entities; felt documentation guidelines were too intense; and felt stressed to "get everything done timely!"

Each of these comments would be investigated and/or changes made, if possible. For example, a patient who required a lot more care and time was given a higher weighted productivity. Yet, other concerns would be heard and explanations provided. For example, a health care entity is also a business and operationally, there are certain guidelines that need adhered to.

It is important to note that staff also shared their love of taking care of the patients and either experiencing them being able to stay in their own home and meet individual medical goals!

I do feel health care workers face a lot of challenges and stress, but the majority of them also love providing care to patients!

2.)Interviewee: My Dad He is an RN working in a local prison

My dad faces a few more challenges than most working inside of a prison but some of the things he struggles with are common across the board. The first thing he mentioned was worker burnout. Staffing shortages are everywhere and health care positions inside of prisons are no exception. He works extremely long hours and must miss out on a fair amount of family time. The next thing he mentioned was his school loan debt. The pandemic has helped him with bringing his debt down but not enough to make a huge difference compared to the large portion he still owes. They have been struggling lately due to my stepmom needing brain surgery last year. She was off work for six months and my dad was the sole provider for the house. The last thing my dad brought up was stress. Long hours and working amongst inmates all day will raise someones stress level.

3.)was able to interview my daughter, who is a Registered Nurse, to get her thoughts on challenges and successes with today's health care. She felt that the constant change in technology and medical enhancements was a challenge to keep up with and all the new evidence-based practices even though the basic fundamentals remained the same. It's a career that would be hard to take a break from and remain competent. She felt that most people get into some form of healthcare with the goal to help others and nursing gives you that feeling of accomplishment. She also felt that an individual could be very successful in the healthcare profession since they have the ability to use a clinical ladder to build their own career advancements. Some challenges that she has encountered over the last several years revolved around the COVID-19 pandemic with high patient-to-nurse ratios, limited resources, overall low staff morale, and shortages created by mandates. In fact, it was these challenges that led her from being an ICU nurse to becoming a Utilization Review nurse who works from home avoiding the clinical setting. Another challenge she commented on that posed an issue, was the increased amount of sicker patients that weren't able to afford the proper treatments so they would self-medicate or self-treat with what they read on the internet because of stipulations set by the insurance companies prevented them from receiving the appropriate care.

4.)I recently spoke with my RN friend about the most significant challenges and successes of practicing in today's healthcare world. She shared that the most critical challenges are staffing shortages and complex patients. Staffing shortages can lead to burnout, fatigue, and errors, while complex patients can be challenging to care for due to their multiple chronic conditions.

Despite these challenges, she loves helping patients get better and making a difference in the world. She finds it rewarding to see patients recover from illness and injury, and she is proud to be a part of the healthcare team that helps them get better.
