The catch with Monsanto patents is that farmers can no longer collect seeds from their own crops at the end of the season. Donald L. Barlett and James B. Steele for Vanity Fair review the company's history and report that Monsanto now seeks "to extend its reach into milk production by marketing an artificial growth hormone for cows that increases their output, and it is taking aggressive steps to put those who don't want to use growth hormone at a commercial disadvantage." Farmers, environmentalists and small businesses complain that Monsanto tactics include threats of legal action against farmers who collect seeds from crops, purchase of conventional seed companies to eliminate competition, disregard for neighbors when it comes to experimental fields or disposing waste, and quarrels with competitors who advertise their products as free of genetically modified material or artificial hormones.
