Police Report
On 4-1-2018 I responded to the area of 1130 S. Orchard Dr. in Salt Lake City on report of a vehicle burglary that had occurred prior. Upon arrival I met with Dan Smith who reported that he came home last night driving his 2014 Honda Civic at approximately 2200 hours, parked the vehicle in his driveway, and went inside his home for the night. When he woke up this morning and walked outside he noticed that the drivers door front window had been smashed out. He walked to the car and noticed his car was in obvious dis-array. He continued that he did not touch anything and did not know if anything was missing at the present time but he did have some valuable items that were locked inside the car.
I began my initial investigation by looking into the car without touching the door or window casing and noticed that items inside the car did in fact seem to be randomly scattered throughout the interior of the car. There was broken glass covering the drivers seat, floor boards, and some shards scattered on the dashboard. Upon my first inspection, I noticed that some pieces of the glass that were laying on the drivers seat were covered in what appeared to be blood, I asked Dan if he had seen anything that would have resembled blood on his window the night before, he stated that he had just washed his car the day before and there was nothing on his windows. I also looked in the immediate proximity of the vehicle for any foot prints or other items of evidence but did not see anything that would have been relevant. I then expended my perimeter and looked around his immediate yard, bushes, fencing, etc. but again, did not find anything that would have been relevant to the case. My intentions were to finish a visual inspection and then collect evidence in a few minutes. I then walked to my patrol car and retrieved a pair of latex gloves, placed them on my hands and with two fingers placed on the outside of the handle, opened the front door as to not disturb any fingerprints that may have been present.
I began by photographing the vehicle in the state in which I found it before moving any items in the vehicle. I then asked Dan where the items that had been found scattered in the vehicle were originally. He stated that the pack of cigarettes which were found to have been on the floor were in the center console so I picked them up and placed them inside an evidence bag for the possibility of fingerprinting by the crime lab. Dan stated that most everything else was where it was supposed to be so at that time I gathered the broken glass which was earlier determined to have the blood on it. I lifted the glass from the seat by simply sliding the evidence envelope under it and in a scooping motion, I was able to contain the glass inside the paper evidence envelope.
I provided Dan with the case number for this call and secured the evidence in the trunk of my patrol car. I then walked to each neighbors home to the south, north, and across the street (west) and knocked on each door with the intent of speaking with each homeowner to see if they may have had surveillance cameras or has seen anything out of the ordinary the night before. I did not receive answers at any of the homes but I will try again later this evening as I make efforts to follow up on this case.
I departed the scene and traveled to the police station. Upon arriving, I removed the evidence from my trunk, secured, labeled, and placed the evidence in temporary evidence locker #2. At the time of this report I have been unable to follow up with the neighbors around Dans home due to call volume.
Please forward this report to the investigations division for further investigation.
