This article is titled Commercial Tobacco Use Within American Indian and Alaska Native (Al/AN) Populations. It states that cigarette smoking is more popular in Al/AN populations than almost any other racial group. It infers that they have an higher risk of tobacco-related disease and increased mortality risk due to the high incidence of smoking. They state that more than 1 in 5 Al/AN adults smoke cigarettes which equates to 22.6%. Under Know the Facts section, it states that smoking increases the chances of losing tribal members to smoke related illnesses or second-hand smoke. The state that elders might die prior to passing on tribal customs and traditions due to these illnesses. Smoking among pregnant women is known to increase risk for pregnancy complications and premature births. These concerns may be a particular risk to these communities where smoking may be more common during pregnancy. Since access to these communities is often limited, utilizing data from a sample to paint a picture of the entire population is helpful.
