A perverse incentive that I have encountered at work is that our owner allows certain installers to have their equipment shipped to our warehouse since we have a loading dock for the trucks to fit into. However, the few girls that we have here at the corporate office get stuck lifting those heaving materials off the truck because the installers are not here at those certain times of truck arrival to pickup their materials. This perverse incentive has many unintended negative consequences that leave my co workers and I to lift heavy objects. As Charles Wheelan states in his book, humans will and make certain decisions that will make themselves as well off as possible (Wheelan, 2019, p.36).
The first economic topic from the reading that I found interesting is about capitalism at the end of Chapter 1, pages 29-30 (Wheelan, 2019, p.29-30). This part of the reading made sense to me when he compared the market economy is to economics what democracy is to government. When I was obtaining my undergraduate degree, I was involved with the Student Government Association. Many conversations about these topics arose during our meetings, such as capitalism and it is very interesting to compare my personal knowledge with Wheelan's perspective.
The second economic topic from the reading that I found interesting is about the "fee for service" system that is discussed in Chapter 5, page 112 (Wheelan, 2019, p.112). I am able to connect this part of the reading to my personal experience because I have had to undergo a lot of medical visits within the past year and have paid plenty of the "fee for services" to each of the doctors. A great statement that Wheelan made is, "Medical innovation is terrific in some cases and wasteful in others" (Wheelan, 2019, p.112).
