Pretend you are Ashley Conroy, the owner of Hoosier Haberdashery, a small online retailer of timeless mens clothing. Last fall was extremely strong for your company, thanks to your creative social media marketing and some timely buzz created when Timothe Chalamet was spotted and paparazzi shot photos of him wearing one of your newest jackets around New York City and again in London for his new movie, Dune. You also offered great off-season deals on 2021-trend winter coats and have noticed an uptick in returns.

In keeping with your companys small-town image and hands-on ethos, you handle customer complaints directly. Going through them this morning, you find a box with one of your coats inside and an angry letter to go with it.

Dan Loomis writes to tell you that the coat he ordered arrived with an 8" cut along the sleeve. He returned the coat in its original box and packaging so that you could see for yourself what shoddy merchandise I received. He demands a refund of $265 or a replacement of the coat.

The cut is a straight narrow one, the kind a knife might make if someone used a sharp blade to cut the box open. All clothing merchandise is wrapped in a protective covering just before it is boxed.
