Write down your opinion about the 5 most important issues facing our society today. Then watch at least a half-hour of news on a major television network (Fox, MSNBC, CBS, CNN, etc.). Rank in order of importance the topics they cover. How well does what the media covers match up with what you find to be important? The question is not whether they agree with your position on the issue, only whether they are talking about the things you find important. If you found your issues match up well with media coverage, do you think that's because the media is covering what you're interested in, or do you find things important because the media covers it?
