May 28 B:3ami Hello Everyone, My name is Amanda Kilgore, and | am a mother to 11 children (one set of triplets). Two of my triplets were diagnosed with nonverbal ASD when they were two years old. | am currently pursuing a BA in psychology. There are not many resources in my area for families and children with ASD unless you travel hours away and sometimes that is net possible with children with ASD. Therefore, | do not have a future career planned; my main purpose in pursuing this degree is to better understand and care for my two autistic sons and to be ina position to help others in my area who are just trying to manage and cope with having children with ASD. Physiological psychology, also referred to as biological psychology or behavioral neuroscience, explores the relationship between the brain, the nervous system, and behavior (Kalat, 2019). | understand that this held examines how brain structures, neurotransmitters, hormones, and genetics influence our thoughts, emotions, and actions. For instance, | know that certain brain regions, like the arnygdala, are linked to emotion, while the hippocarnpus is vital for memory. | am also aware that physiological psychology uses tools like brain imaging to investigate these connections. Lam particularly interested in learning how physiological psychology can deepen our understanding of ASD. | hope to explore the neurological and genetic factors that contribute to ASD, how differences in brain structure and function relate to the behaviors and challenges seen in ASD, the role of neurotransmitters and hormones in ASD, and current research on interventions or therapies rooted in physiological psychology. | expect this course will help me grasp the biological underpinnings of ASD, clarify why individuals with ASD experience the world differently, and highlight new directions for research and treatment. As | stated above, | have not planned out a future career, only to have a better understanding of my two sons with ASD and help other families in managing and coping. By understanding the physiological basis of ASD, | hope to communicate more effectively with my own children and others with ASD and their families by explaining the biological aspects of the disorder, advocate for evidence-based interventions and supports, and contribute to research or programs that improve the quality of life for those with ASD. -Amanda Reference
