I chose WANs. The fact that they are so varied, not only in use but also in their components make them unique and can give you insight into the designers mindset. You can see if their focus was on speed, security, compatibility, or any mix of these. The components can show you if it was done with a mindset of "this is a starting point", "This is all we should need", or "This is what you gave me, so this is what you get". The fact that so many networks get established with the bare minimum thought in regards to the constant advances that technology makes can be disheartening. Sadly, even the newest, most up to date technology will be obsolete within a few years.
