Case: Gias Gourmet Chocolates, Inc.
Gia Giamello had always had a sweet tooth, even at a young age, and was constantly baking treats (especially chocolates) for her family. However, she had an even bigger appetite for becoming a successful businessperson. Forever an entrepreneur, she started many enterprises, and her latest venture was selling organic chocolates. Seven years ago, she created a small chocolate company, Gias Gourmet Chocolates Incorporated (GGC), with a goal of targeting downtown Torontos Bay Street lawyers and bankers. Her quality, handcrafted, and fine chocolates made with only organic ingredients became extremely popular as the news spread about how they were the perfect gifts for important loyal clients. She packaged them with care and personally delivered the chocolates to each customer. Gia realized there was a niche for gourmet chocolates and positioned the brand as a mini luxury for the wealthy and those who pretended to be wealthy. Finally, after many years of success, she decided to expand into retail stores. Her rapid growth led to 25 locations throughout Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia, as well as hundreds of employees working in production, operations, finance, and of course at the stores themselves.
Always on the lookout for up and coming talent, Gia posted an ad on her company Facebook page seeking a recent Marketing grad. A chocolate lover by heart, you couldnt pass up the chance to work there. You were hired immediately as a Marketing & Advertising Assistant at GGC. With your Seneca credentials to guide you, your responsibilities included all marketing/advertising functions as well as monitoring/growing sales for the province of British Columbia.
Youve now been on the job for only a few weeks, and your manager has just asked you to present sales results at the annual marketing meeting being held at the corporate headquarters in Toronto. You know they (GIA) are eager to hear about the success with the B.C. stores. Average sales revenue per store for GGC was around $50,000 per month, but within B.C., sales per store were estimated to finish 2022 with about $77,000 per month. The year they opened, in 2020, revenue was $25,000 per store and it has been growing at a healthy rate. You think there are a few reasons that sales revenue has continued to increase from last year. To support your hypotheses, you gathered further data about your stores and customers, as shown in Chart 1 below:
Chart 1: Average monthly store traffic, customer purchases and revenue
202020212022
# of customers per month (traffic)7,0009,00011,500
# of customers who buy 2,5003,6675,133
Average purchase amount $10 $12 $15
Total revenue $25,000 $44,000 $77,000
Proportion of customers who buy 36%41%45%
The number of customers that came into the store (traffic as retailers say) has changed in three years. In 2020, it first year, traffic averaged 7,000 per month and then grew to 9,000 per month in 2021. In 2022 traffic is predicted to be as good with an estimate of 11,500 per month.
In addition, the number of customers who purchase at least one item (once they are in the store) has grown steadily during the past three years. In 2020,2,500 of the 7,000 who entered the store purchased something. In 2021,3,667 customers, on average, made a purchase. And in 2022, it is estimated that 5,133 customers will buy.
Finally, the average $ amount sold per customer has differed each year. Customers bought, on average, $10, $12, and $15 worth of chocolates for 2020,2021, and 2022, respectively. Based on data from your sales records, it seems Gias customers are buying more and more of the expensive $15+ chocolates.
This presentation will be important since this would be the first time presenting to the CEO, Gia herself. You want to impress her with your knowledge and creativity (attention getter and closing statement).
