Written News Legal Commentary #1 Students will quickly discover that much of what makes up the news and commentary in the media involve issues of a legal nature, such as matters involving immigration, abortion rights, LGBT rights, search and seizure, religious freedom, the Second Amendment, privacy, sexual harassment, and many more. It is important that students understand how legal issues and principles, even controversial ones, pervade everyday life. To instill appreciation of the law as it pertains to our society, students will be expected to review news sources, such as newspapers, magazines and online news sources for articles of a legal nature. The students should be prepared to discuss their articles for participation credit and to turn in one written commentary in each of February, March and April. The professor will provide guidelines as to the format of the written legal current news commentary. These assignments will constitute 15% of the student's grade. The format is essay style which should include the following: 1. Source of the News; i.e., CNN, FOX NEWS, NY TIMES, Etc. 2. Statement of the facts and the law involved; i.e., statute, lawsuit, pending legislation, new proposed regulation, etc. 3. Status of the legal matter 4. How this article and case, statute, etc., affects or may affect business, either in general or industry specific 5. What is your opinion about the matter and what results?
