St. Louis Date: 4 September 2016 Subject: Developing a Telecommuting Policy Summary: The Operations Developing department has noticed that Field Supply Maintenance Analysis Office (FSMAO) lacks a telecommuting policy. Complaints from the analysts are occurring because the lack of such policy given that they are inspecting units on bases all around the world. They have complained that reporting to a main location should not be a requirement in order to be effective in their duties. In able to sustain operations around the world, our Marine Corps must become familiar with maintenance procedures, policies, and training in order to maintain our equipment's readiness. According to Global Workplace Analytics, 2.5% of the United States workforce work from home at least half the time and 80% to 90% of the US workforce would like to telework at least part time (Global, 2015). They believe that two to three days a week seem to be a good balance of concentrative work at home and collaborative work at their offices. TELECOMMUTING POLICY 3 Preliminary Ideas for Solving the Problem I would like to recommend a new telecommuting policy be put into place at Sunrise Company. In order for this to happen, I suggest to conduct a screening in order to determine who is eligible to participate in the program. We must also set a guideline, which will determine the amount of work hours needed the different types of applications, and a strong security program. I recommend that FSMAO's make telecommuting arrangements in order to carry out trials for a few months to see the effects it has on our corporation. Prior to these trials, however, management should make sure that appropriate research, training, and equipment is acquired in order to have the full experience, this way we will be able to make a more accurate decision in regards to the new policy. Throughout these trial months, management should constantly keep performance evaluations for all teleworkers participating in the trial. FSMAO's should also conduct a satisfaction survey that evaluates the performance to see the satisfaction levels and to get feedback from our customers. When trials are finally done, the telecommuting policy will need to be fully evaluated in order to assess the following: Teleworkers performance Cost/time efficiency Satisfaction levels Productivity levels What Research Has Been Conducted about the Problem? I did a literature review on the benefits and challenges of teleworking. The exploration of teleworking gives insight on the advantages of teleworking to both the employee as well as the employer. Advancement in technology has been one factor that has marked a milestone in telecommuting making it easy and possible for the people who desire to utilize it for their advantage. In most cases, Telecommuting has more advantages and results in more productivity in a firm as compared to the scale of disadvantages it could have.
