You are required to prepare a PowerPoint presentation on one of the topics listed below. Your presentation should be 12-15 minutes in length; a presentation of this approximate length may require between 10 and 20+ slides, depending on your personal preferences and the multitude of decisions you make related to how you will present the information. Students must use PowerPoint to create the presentation for this assignment and Kaltura Capture to record themselves presenting the PPT. Remember, this course is titled Business Communications and large portions of our text are devoted to best practices (dos and donts). APA style/referencing is mandatory. See the Writing Guide for your instructors requirements for sources in a PowerPoint.
The presentation grade will be based upon your demonstrated knowledge of best practices in communication (50%), apparent knowledge of the subject being discussed based on the accuracy of the information in your presentation (25%) and your ability to conduct quality, independent academic research (25%). Presentations must be recorded via PowerPoint.
When giving your presentation, assume you are presenting the information to your immediate supervisor (boss) and twenty of your colleagues (coworkers), and that the level of interest in the audience varies from disinterested to hostile. Assume that no one in the audience has any knowledge of the information you are presenting and that your position requires that you successfully acquire and present the solicited information. A poor presentation may result in termination while a positive presentation may result in promotion.
Each student will also prepare a 3 to 4-page report on his or her presentation pointing out at least six of the decisions he or she made (order of presentation, color scheme, sentence construction, tone of presentation, sources, word choice, tone, etc.) when preparing the presentation and the reasons each of these decisions was made based on the information covered in our course. The report will be graded based on your ability to A) write clearly, concisely, and cohesively and B) demonstrate your acquired knowledge of best practices regarding communicating in a business setting. The six decisions should be clearly numbered and separated with subheadings.
You will make dozens of decisions as you prepare your presentation but you need to explain at least six decisions that you made that had a sound basis in our course material and why those decisions were important or why making a different choice would have been detrimental to your presentation. Make sure to thoroughly explain each choice, the factual basis for the choice (that is, the justification from our course text and/or outside, scholarly resources), and why a different choice would have been inappropriate. In addition to information from the text, you are required to incorporate at least two peer-reviewed articles into your report. Again, these sources will essentially provide the defense for your choices. Each decision should have at least one source. This paper is to be entirely your own, independent work. Collaboration is not allowed.
Topics
Each individual will address one of the following topics; a list of subtopics is provided to guide your research. You will need to conduct research at the LWC library (either in person or online) to complete this assignment. Keep in mind that scholarly sources are required for this assignment including at least two peer-reviewed sources (for the paper). If you have any question about what constitutes a scholarly source, email me immediately. Be sure to include citations in your presentation for each slide (in the notes section). Again, APA formatting is mandatory for the report portion of this assignment and the presentation should include references in the notes sections (see Writing Guide).
