The Case:

Giving Voice to Values Case AnalysisJust some Gossip You are newly appointed to the position of team leader in an iron ore mining company in the north of Sweden. The project involves managing the site preparation for a large mining facility in an isolated part of northern Sweden. Your team is a mixture of international professionals, trades people and machine operators. You soon notice that one member of your new team, Petra, encounters ongoing but relatively low levels of harassment from some other team members. However, she does not appear to be affected or upset in any way by the treatment and gossip. Having worked for some time in the mining industry you know that various levels of gossip and low levels of harassment is commonly experienced by women in some sectors of the mining industry. In your first weeks of working on the project you see that several team members engage in a range of behaviours towards Petra. These include failing to accord common courtesies, exclusion, occasional jokes directed at Petra, rumours and comments about her sexuality, comments about her appearance and choice of clothes and hair style. At one team meeting you speak generally about the need to be courteous and respectful towards team members but this does not seem have any effect on the behaviour towards Petra. You have an open and easy-going style in managing people and tend to shy away from conflict situations. The problem does not affect team performance but you raise this issue informally with two other team leaders. You say you suspect a female in your team is being bullied in some way but she doesnt seem to find it a problem. One colleague says if its not having any impact on her forget about it. He goes on to say that its not your responsibility to deal with such things because the team member can always contact Human Resources if she has a complaint. The other colleague says these things are common in mining and thats how it is, we all know it takes place but thats how the culture is. You are not convinced by their comments. Back at the site nothing has changed and after some weeks you begin to feel some stress and concern about the issue as it continues. Eventually you decide you must do something more about the problem. You are to develop a GVV action plan for the attached case.
