Question:
You have been the director of an early childhood program for 10 years. In your community, your program has earned a solid reputation, although you are aware that your program could use some sprucing up, both inside and outside. However, at this point, you do not have the finances to make such changes. Your teachers have all been employed at your program for over 5 years. While you offer periodic raises, you are limited by your budget. Your teachers seem to understand, and you try to reward them with positive feedback.
A large corporate childcare employer has just completed construction of a state-of-the-art childcare center on its business site, which is scheduled to open next month. You learned that the corporation would cover the rent, utilities, grounds keeping, maintenance, and even food costs, as the meals are catered by the corporation's cafeteria. The new center will be able to pay teachers a higher salary, since most other costs will be paid by the corporation. Parents will pay about the same in tuition, but for those who work at that location, their convenience will be greatly increased.
Your center owner is concerned that the program you run will not be able to compete with the new center.
