Carnegie was one of the richest industrialists of the 19th century. His memoirs reveal his philosophy of INDIVIDUALISM-people lifting themselves up on their own. Gompers, a former cigar maker, founded and led the American Federation of Labor, the first long-lasting union federation in American history (it still includes unions that represent millions of workers). Gompers believed that workers would lift themselves up through COLLECTIVE action. Imagine the two men were speaking in front of an audience on the topic of "liberty of contract."
