Your final writing assignment of the semester requires you to look back atthe semester, course materials, class discussions, ATLAS videos, and what you have learned to address the course objective: The teacher candidate reflects on course materials, readings, and assignments to write about the profession.Great teachers do not just absorb information and forget it for the future. Great teachers reflect on what they learned, analyze the information, determine its potential challenges and benefits, and make a plan to implement concepts and skills they have learned. Therefore, this final writing assignment asks you to perform a similar task to help you become a better, more mindful, intentional teacher in the future.
Purpose of the assignment:- Reflect on the knowledge and skills you gained this semester to plan for future classroom application
- Demonstrate the ability to observe and analyze a classroom setting to identify elements of teaching and assessment by watching a video lesson
- Demonstrate improvement upon your last attempt at synthesizing information to present an argument or viewpoint.
- Demonstrate your ability to write using conventions of the education profession (Citations, APA format, spelling, grammar, etc.).
- For this paper, you will watch an ATLAS video and write an analysis of the teaching and assessment it contains. You will also discuss your experiences and learning this semester and how you will use what you learned in the future.
- Your paper must use at least three (3) scholarly sources, which can include the course textbook.
- Your paper must include and/or address the following:
- General Paper Elements
- Begin with an introduction that draws your reader’s interest and features a thesis statement that articulates the premise of your paper.
- Support your thesis statement in the body of the paper by staying on topic and including ideas that support your main point.
- End with a concluding paragraph that ties back to the introduction, rewords the thesis statement, and leaves the reader with something memorable or a call to action.
- SECTIONS OF THE PAPER
- Section 1:ATLAS Video Analysis
- Choose and watch an ATLAS video for the grade level, content area, etc. you want to teach in the future.
- After watching the video, your first section should address the following:
- Which TEK would align with the lesson in your chosen video?
- Identify 2-3 classroom contextual factors that appeared in the video
- Identify and evaluate what the learning goals appear to be in the video
- Are the learning goals clear and understandable?
- Did the teacher successfully address the learning goals?
- Describe the assessments the teacher used in the video and discuss their effectiveness
- Assume that you will teach the next lesson and describe and/or explain the following:
- Identify the TEK for the next lesson
- Write 1-2 goals/objectives for your TEK/lesson and complete an Assessment Format Table with the following
- Learning Goals
- At least 2 assessments (1 formative and 1 summative)
- Format of the assessments chosen
- A short explanation of 1-2 instructional strategies you would use for the lesson (e.g. think, pair, share; lecture, etc.)
- Section 2:Application to Your Future Classroom
- Explain how the ATLAS videos, class discussions, and other course materials have influenced your approach to assessment
- Describe what steps you will take to use assessment when lesson planning
- How will you ensure your assessments and evaluation strategies are equitable for all students regardless of demographics, special needs, etc.
- Section 3:Personal Reflection and Self-Assessment
- Do you feel more confident about teaching and assessment? Explain why or why not.
- Explain how your effort, planning, and time management for the course affected your grade. If you did not do as well as you had hoped, what can you do differently for your next course? What does this teach you about your future students?
- If you imagine yourself in the classroom a few years from today, what would you want your students to say about your approach to teaching and assessment?
