A colloquial measure of power used in the air conditioning industry is the ton of air conditioning =3.517 kW(see §9, Problem 9.5). It is the average power required to melt one ton of ice in one day. Check this number. If melting ice was actually used to provide cooling, it would not only be allowed to melt but would also be allowed to warm to room temperature. Compute the 2nd law efficiency of this method of air conditioning a home with indoor temperature 27 ^◦C and outdoor temperature 37 ^◦C. To do this you must find the maximum reversible work that can be done by a ton of ice under these conditions.
