Book Price $0 : Stacie DeFreitas PhD explores the rich tapestry of psychological experiences unique to African American communities in her book 'African American Psychology: A Positive Psychology Perspective'. By integrating the principles of positive psychology, DeFreitas challenges traditional narratives by focusing not on the deficits but on the strengths, resilience, and cultural assets of African Americans. This approach is a strategic shift from the usual pathology-focused studies, providing a fresh lens through which the psychological wellbeing and cultural richness of African Americans can be better understood. The book’s comprehensive table of contents systematically addresses various facets such as identity development, family dynamics, spirituality, and community engagement. Furthermore, DeFreitas' work acts as a kind of 'solution manual' for scholars and students alike, offering guidance on integrating cultural context into psychological practice and research. With a theoretical yet practical approach, it's an 'answer key' for effectively blending positive psychology with cultural understanding. Early reception has been positive, with readers appreciating the accessibility and depth presented across its structured chapters. This book uniquely serves as a resource for those seeking to deepen their comprehension of how psychological resilience and positive attributes manifest within African American communities. Largely praised for its analytical depth and insightful perspectives, this pioneering text is a crucial addition to the field of cross-cultural psychology, particularly within educational and community-based applications. By reframing narratives, it opens new pathways for future research and practical implementation in psychological support frameworks. Offering a cheap alternative to pricey educational materials, this book lends itself well to cost-saving efforts.

Got this book free and it came super quick, which was cool. Haven't dug into much yet but the pages feel sturdy and clean. Bought it for my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a focus on African American Studies studies, so looks promising for the semester ahead.

So I stumbled onto this book because one of my profs recommended it during orientation, and honestly, I was a bit unsure if it’d be useful since it’s a free textbook for the course. But man, Chapter 5—which dives into community resilience—hit me hard. Before reading this, I struggled with finding positive angles in what sometimes felt like endless negative stereotypes around African American psychology in other stuff I'd read. This chapter flipped the switch for me.
Walking through the real-life stories it shares, plus explanations about strength-based approaches in mental health, honestly made things click for me in a way the usual psychology books haven’t. I had one of those moments where stuff just made sense differently.
The way they made the science relatable, peppered with case examples, gave me fresh ideas I even used to approach conversations in my volunteer work at a youth center. Talking about resilience felt way more genuine and impactful thanks to what I picked up there.
The only part that dragged me a bit was some terminology that felt dense at first—but since it’s an updated edition, I get it probably aims to be accurate but simple. Overall it’s laid out clearly, and the uppercase headings made navigating chapters painless.
If you have any interest in psychology and want to move beyond usual textbook stuff, especially with focus on positive perspectives, I think this book is worth checking out no matter your level. Oh, BTW it showed up perfect and was free, so ya can’t beat that. Five stars for actually making me think, which is what college’s supposed to do in the first place!

Arrived way sooner than expected for my The City University of New York Medgar Evers College class and the book feels solid and easy to carry around. haven’t had time to really dig in but looks like it’ll be a good help this semester, and it’s free so like, no complaints at all.
