Was trying to figure out which computer science book would actually help me get through my weird moments of confusion in class when I stumbled across this free copy of Computer Science Illuminated, 6th Edition. No joke, getting it for free made me curious and willing to give it a shot without much pressure. When I reached Chapter 5—covering Operating Systems—I was kinda surprised how it clicked for me. I've always thought OS stuff was mysterious, but this chapter broke down processes, memory, and file management in a way that didn’t put my brain in overload. There was this moment reading about how scheduling algorithms work that just made things like multitasking and ‘why my laptop sometimes freaks out’ make so much sense. After that, I figured out how to troubleshoot some sluggish stuff on my own laptop, even tweaking startup tasks from what I learned! Honestly, while the examples are clear, sometimes the chapter drags a bit in the middle with lists of terms that felt like too much, but the diagrams and stories about real OS concepts kept me hooked enough to ignore that. I’d say if you’re kind of lost with all the system tech but want a casual approach that also isn’t dumbed down, grabbing this book (even better if it’s free!) is a no-brainer. It helped me get my head around something that had just felt like jargon before and I think could do the same for others.

Coming from a different background, transitioning to this field was a bit daunting. This book eased that transition significantly. The authors' explanations on key concepts stood out. However, I wish there were more case studies with pitfalls to avoid.

I've been working in this field for years but needed a refresher for the certification. This book was exactly what I needed to feel ready again. The practice questions helped boost my confidence too.
