Conformity and Obedience Social Psychologists make a distinction between two types of social influence: Informational and Normative.

Question:

Conformity and Obedience Social Psychologists make a distinction between two types of social influence: Informational and Normative. Consider the role of both Informational and Normative influence in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Which do you think played a bigger role or was they equally important? Stanley Milgram suspected that the Holocaust was a horrifying fluke that would never occur again. To test this, he developed his famous study on obedience to authority. He was shocked (no pun intended!) by the high levels of obedience his study uncovered and concluded that any of us might be capable of inflicting severe harm on others, under the "right" circumstances.
Do you think his results (and/or the more recent replications) provide evidence that atrocities of the magnitude seen in the Holocaust could occur in contemporary society? Why or why not?
Initial Post Requirements: Provide at least one example of both normative and informational influence in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Try to generate examples that are different from what others have posted. Pick a side arguing whether informational or normative influence was more important, or whether they were equally important. State your opinion as to whether Milgram's study provides convincing evidence that atrocities of the magnitude seen in the Holocaust could occur in contemporary society. Give valid and well-explained reasons for each of your opinions.
